This spring, David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles will host Jason Fox’s compelling solo exhibition, “Why Are You Sitting In The Dark” (May 16 – June 28, 2025). This immersive show will plunge viewers into Fox’s distinctive universe, where contemporary painting, drawing, and sculpture converge to probe themes of identity, pop culture saturation, art history, and the complex interplay between darkness and revelation. Featuring signature hybrid figures that meld cultural icons like Joni Mitchell and Bob Marley with uncanny forms, alongside evocative sculptures like the Willie Nelson-inspired Willie (2022), the exhibition will showcase Fox’s four-decade journey of challenging conventions and embracing the ambiguous depths of the human psyche through a unique blend of modernist rigor, comic book aesthetics, and existential inquiry. It will be a powerful invitation to explore the uncomfortable yet fascinating spaces where familiarity meets the grotesque, and where surface and depth become indistinguishable collaborators in meaning-making.
