Born in 1984 in Toronto and largely self-taught, Matthew Wong emerged in the art world with a deeply lyrical visual language that fused elements of Chinese literati painting, post-impressionism, and modernist abstraction. Diagnosed with autism and depression, Wong began painting in his late twenties after initially exploring photography and poetry. His poignant compositions—filled with solitary trees, dreamlike interiors, and jewel-toned nocturnes—garnered critical acclaim after his breakout 2018 solo at Karma Gallery in New York. Though his life was tragically cut short in 2019, his legacy continues to expand through the stewardship of the Matthew Wong Foundation and the efforts of institutions like Bueno & Co, who work to secure his place within the canon of 21st-century masters. The Vienna exhibition positions Wong not as a mere contemporary echo of van Gogh, but as a peer in emotional intensity and symbolic depth—two artists separated by time but united in their need to paint as an ultimate act of survival.
